Cartoonist Vs. Biologist

February 1, 2007

Dilbert creator Scott Adams is taking on biologist PZ Myers in a BattleOfTheIsts

The most entertaining self-important, humorless, autofellating, ass hat (SHAAH for short) is a biologist named PZ Myers. He’s made it a personal mission to misunderstand me and then get very angry about his misunderstandings. He has a sizeable following and is highly entertaining, in an entirely accidental way.

PaSHaAH. I wonder if PZ realizes that most Canadians will read his name “PeeZed Myers” rather than “PeeZee Myers”? Regardless, this is a one-sided fight and I hope the ring doctor calls the match early.

Vlogger Vs. Gadgeteer

Jason Calacanis of Engadget fame writes an open letter to Vlogger Robert Scoble

At this point you’re basically slandering them and spreading lies. You’re acting like a spoiled jerk and as your friend I feel the need to tell you that.

Ahhhh the “social web” is a wonderful thing. I’m betting on the Gadgeteer in this BlogBattle mostly since I haven’t heard such an eloquent and heart felt argument since….. ummmmmm, like grade 7 home room.

Octopus Tool Use?

How do you define tool use? I came across the little octopus on a night dive. He was walking around carrying two halves of a shell with him. When threatened, he closed himself up inside the shell. Now many animals, like the hermit crab, adopt a shell for protection but in this case the octopus carried around two sides that he knew fit together. That comes close to tool use in my book.

An Ocean World Podcast about the Blanket Octopus provides an even better case of tool use. The Blanket Octopus is famous for sexual dimorphism, the male being much smaller (2cm) than the female (6ft). But the really cool thing, in my opinion, is the way the tiny male uses jellyfish tentacles. Apparently he gathers the living stinging tentacles from jelly fish, holds them between his suckers, and wields them when threatened.
